Notice of Landfill Approval Application Submission

The Wainwright Regional Landfill is currently limited to receiving no more than 10,000 tonnes of waste per year under its existing licence from Alberta Environment. However, steady growth across the region over the years has led to this limit being met or exceeded, even with ongoing efforts to divert waste through expanded recycling programs. To address this capacity challenge and support the long-term waste management needs of the community, the Wainwright Regional Waste to Energy Authority has applied to Alberta Environment for a new approval that would remove the existing annual waste tonnage limit.

The application is now under review by provincial regulators. It is expected to be advertised in the coming weeks, at which time members of the public will have an opportunity to review the application and provide written feedback as part of the formal consultation process under Alberta’s Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

The landfill provides an affordable, convenient and environmentally protective way to manage non-hazardous solid waste from its catchment area, the Wainwright region.  The new approval will allow the landfill to continue to operate for many decades to come, even as our community continues to grow.  The approval application requests authorization to operate within the existing waste footprint, and replaces an application submitted in 2019 which requested expansion of the waste footprint.

While the formal provincial process invites engagement from the public regarding the application, the Authority welcomes questions or comments about continued operation of the landfill at any time.  If you are interested in the landfill, the approval application or any other aspect of waste or recycling in our community, please contact Scott Dubeau at landfillop@wainwright.ca.
